Calcium antagonists and renal hemodynamics: implications for renal protection.

Recently, attention has focussed on the effects of calcium antagonists on renal function. When administered in vitro to the isolated perfused kidney, calcium antagonists exhibit consistent actions permitting characterization of their renal hemodynamic effects. Calcium antagonists do not affect the vascular tone of the vasodilated isolated perfused kidney, but they do dramatically reverse the re...

Calcium antagonists: effects on cardio-renal risk in hypertensive patients.

Calcium antagonists comprise 2 main subclasses, dihydropyridines and nondihydropyridines, and have been studied extensively in hypertensive patients. Early meta-analyses suggested that short-acting calcium antagonists were associated with higher mortality rates resulting from cardiovascular events and other etiologies. Recent meta-analyses failed to show any substantive difference between long ...

Clinical pharmacology of calcium antagonists. Satellite symposium on calcium antagonists.

A new class of agents has been made available for the treatment of hypertension. These calcium antagonists have rapid bioavailability and dramatic antihypertensive effects through reduction of total peripheral resistance and the vascular resistance of the major target organs of the body. These changes are usually associated with unchanged cardiac output, preserved organ blood flows, maintained ...

Inhibitory action of calcium antagonists on ATP-dependent calcium uptake by the renal cortical microsomes.

Effects of Ca2+ antagonists, verapamil and diltiazem, on uptake and release of Ca2+ by microsomes of the renal cortex were studied. Verapamil inhibited the ATP-dependent Ca2+ uptake by renal microsomes. Addition of 0.8 mM verapamil was required to produce 50% inhibition of the ATP-dependent CA2+ uptake. Diltiazem also depressed the Ca2+ uptake was not due to an increased permeability for Ca2+, ...
